Themajority of people adopt puppies from shelters; however, there are people whodesire an adult dog as their new family member. However, what do you do if youbring your new dog home, tell him to sit, and he ignores you completely? Hoursupon hours of frustration and repeating the word “sit” have only succeeded inyour dog listening half the time. What’s wrong? The neighbor’s new puppy had itdown pat in just 30 minutes, so why is your adult dog who has a betterattention span bouncing as if you’re poised to throw their favorite tennisball?

Takea breath and relax; there could be a simple solution. Many dogs that are givento shelters often have had families in the past that never really worked withthem. If the old owners expected Sparky to behave only half the time, Sparkyhas already learned that he doesn’t have to obey. The truth is that your doghas a good chance of never listening completely when you use that specificcommand. However, there are a few easy ways to fix this and teach your dog toact like a proper, obedient pet.

Onesolution is to choose a different word, something a little less commonly used. Theword can be something like ‘behave.’ Go through the same motions you would toteach him to sit. Either use a treat, and hold it slightly above his head whilesaying “Behave,” or speak the word you’ve chosen while pressing lightly on herhaunches to force her gently into a sitting position. The dog will not have anyassociation with the new word and will more readily pick up on the idea that acertain action is expected. If you are consistent, the dog will be consistent,also. Do you know that foreign languageclass you’ve always wanted to take? Teaching your dog commands in a separatelanguage is a wonderful exercise for you both and makes it less likely to runinto any other “word barriers.”

Somedogs just are not made for a simple verbal command, however. If this doesn’tseem to be working, then another idea to try is hand signals. Herding dogs,such as Australian Shepherds and Border Collies, are bred for an environmentwhere the baaing of sheep and lowing of cattle can make hearing a commandimpossible. Sometimes these dogs respond better to a command coupled with ahand signal. Over time, you can drop the word, and simply use the hand signal toget the results you desire. Again, the key is consistency.

Experimentwith your new family member to see if changing the word or if using a handsignal is more effective. Try to avoid commonly used words such as “sit, stay,come.” Above all, remember to always be patient, consistent, and rewarding whenyour dog does the action you desire.

Canine Auditions for “Crab” the Dog
March 21, 2012

The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in Incline Village announces auditions for “Crab” — the dog who plays an important and loving role in William Shakespeare's “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” which will be performed from July 13–Aug. 26 at Sand Harbor State Park.

“The ideal candidates should be extremely mellow in nature, must be able to perform outdoors in any weather and resist the temptation to run, act upon or be interested in outside distractions such as bugs, animals, people, sound and lights,” Producing Artistic Director Charles Fee said.

The dog must also be agile, able to negotiate a flight of stairs (up and down), be well behaved and respond to simple commands like “sit”, “stay” and “down” or similar behavioral commands.

“Service trained dogs are welcome as are any other fun-loving, well-behaved canines who have dreamed of stardom,” Fee said.

The first round of auditions is set for 4:30-7:30 p.m. March 21 at the Donald W. Reynolds Non-Profit Community Center located at 948 Incline Way in Incline Village.

To qualify for an audition, interested parties must send a headshot of the dog, owner/handler information and any additional details that they'd like to share to info@tahoebard.com. Once the information is reviewed, all applicants will receive a call to confirm a time for the first interview.

If the dog is selected to continue with the audition process, the final audition will be scheduled for 4:30-7:30 p.m. April 24. Two dogs will be selected due to the extended run of the play.

Rehearsals start July 9 and the dogs must be available every night as scheduled, from 7-10:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays to perform in approximately four scenes. Owners must also be on site during the entire duration of the scheduled shows.

“In addition to their dogs being in the spotlight of our performance, their owners receive a variety of benefits including tickets to the show, a stipend and other perks,” said Fee.

Sightings of Wild Animals in Urban Neighborhoods

Wild (Urban) Things… Reclaiming their territory?

Many neighborhoods in Reno are being subjected to an animal invasion of sorts with increasing attempts by wild critters to reclaim their original territory. The frequency of such reports is noticeable. In the Hidden Valley area of Reno’s Truckee Meadows wild horses and occasional deer feast on lush lawns and expensive shrubbery while damaging sprinkler heads and leaving unwelcome ‘calling cards’! Well meaning residents accept these expenses and inconveniences considering them collateral damage as it were. Many residents do not! It is always a treat in certain parts of southwest Reno to see a huge owl high in a tree dodging pesky small birds very aware of feeding habits of their much larger cousins. In most cases these big guys are eventually driven off but not before reducing the number of birds and rodents in the area and an occasional curious cat or small dog in the process. Very large and well fed owls and hawks are thriving in all parts of our urban community as evidences of their successful hunting skills are frequently seen…mostly just feathers! It wasn’t a pretty sight one morning several years ago when a southwest Reno family put their pet rabbit out in their fenced-in back yard to munch on dew laden grass. Later when they went to collect the bunny there wasn’t much left to collect and in looking around they saw two bobcats figuratively saying “Thanks” while picking their teeth and smiling after the donation of such a fine meal! They were later seen several more times by neighbors, but not at mealtime! On her way to work not long ago my wife was stunned when she saw a coyote proudly strutting down the middle of Meadow Springs Drive with a doomed cat in his mouth! Coyote sightings are becoming more numerous in our area as are postings of missing dogs and cats on fences and light posts. Virginia Lake has a very large year-around population of birds of many feathers and it is fun to watch kids feed them on bread, grain and such. Sometimes they are completely surrounded by hungry, demanding Canadian honkers, ducks, pigeons, small birds and gulls, and quite often very small children are frightened by their demands. These critters have claimed Virginia Lake as their year-around residence and refuse to leave as long as they are being fed.On rare occasions, a huge white swan visits the lake and it is a treat to see it land, commence grooming while challenging the other ducks and geese to give him a wide berth. Picturesque! No doubt this beauty has a permanent home on the campus of the University of Nevada and is just ‘visiting’ at Virginia Lake with the thought of claiming it as a permanent residence.

About a year ago I found out my 8 year old English Sheepdog Mickey had liver cancer. Needless to say I was heartbroken. I kept her at home with me hoping for a miracle.

Well, she started to get worse and worse.The problem was I just could bring myself to take her into the Vet's office to have her put down. It just seemed to impersonal to me. So, I researched the internet and liked what I read about Vet To Pet and Dr. Bufkin. I phoned her and scheduled a time in a few days to come and put Mickey down. Unfortunately, the next day Mickey got really sick, and I knew it was time. I phoned Dr. Bufkin. At the time she was busy with another patient, but said she would get to my house as soon as possible. An hour later Dr. Bufkin arrived. Dr. Bufkin and I decided to do the procedure right on the front porch. As soon as I started talking I felt that I was so relieved that she was here.

I took Mickey's head into my lap and started to pet her. She looked up into my eyes and asked me to stop the suffering she was going through. After the Doctor finished Mickey looked so peaceful. Of course I broke down at that point and sobbed.Dr. Bufkin gave me a hug and assured me that Mickey was in a much better place. Dr. Bufkin was so professional and compassionate, that I was so thankful, and lucky that I had chosen her to do this very unpleasant task. ---I just wanted to write this letter, because I still think of Mickey often and because Dr. Bufkin of Vet to Pet was there and made a horrible situation better. What's the secret...? Puppy introductions, puppy training, puppy analysis...?

So, we are on day THREE with our new adorable, gigantic, five-week-old puppy named Milo. Witmers have never been so in love with a brown, soft teddy bear puppy.

So far I have discovered when he learns something, I learn something.

For example, we are both learning crate training for the first time. Milo likes the treats and general calm in his carrier. I like the moment to myself with no fear of the thimble-sized mistakes around the house!

When Milo the pup is good; he's amazing. Like today, he stood by the door to go outside for the FIRST time, waiting for me to see him. Unfortunately that wonderful moment was followed by about twenty mini mistakes in the house, in about 11 minutes. (Yes, that IS possible after a very thirsty pup overindulges.)

But the first two days, Milo had NO MISTAKES in the house. Go figure.

Unfortunately I do know that Milo is growing, bigger by the minute. At fourteen pounds now, he is a hefty bundle to carry around the house. Gotta get him trained quickly. No piddles and no chewing the furniture! Also I have given up on my daily workouts until he gets settled in. Better be before I outgrow my favorite jeans.

Wish me luck with more crate training tonight!!! Last night I slept on the floor with my pillow at the base of his crate; Milo slept in almost two-hour increments with the door to his crate open. My favorite moment was around 4am when I woke to Milo looking eye to eye to me, seemed like he was saying "why don't I get a pillow?" I moved my head to the side a little, and he stretched just his front end out of the crate to rest his brown furry face on the pillow right next to my head. We slept like that until my husband Bruce swept in at 6am to take the puppy outside. I lay motionless catching up on lost zzzzs. We are truly kin!

Right now Milo is sleeping beside me. Back to looking like such a little, soft, sweet cutie. I am on high alert for signs of life; then I will carry him outside in the cold for quick potty-time.

Wonder what we will both be learning when Milo wakes up?!

A Horse Named Reckless--One of the Most Honored in the World

Sgt Reckless

A small Mongolian mare became a national hero in 1954 when an article ran in the Saturday Evening Post about her heroics during several battles during the Korean War. Now Reckless has a movie, fan club, facebook page, Life Magazine collector's edition article, and her own Memorial Fund on her web site.

The story of Reckless is not only remarkable - it is unusual. And once you learn about her, you will see why the Marine Corps not only fell in love with her - but honored her and promoted her every chance they got. And it wasn’t just the Marines that served with her in the trenches that honored her - her last promotion to Staff Sergeant was by Gen. Randolph McC Pate - the Commandant of the entire Marine Corps. You can’t get higher than that in the Marines.

Reckless joined the Marines to carry ammunition to the front lines for the 75mm Recoilless Rifle Platoon of the 5th Marines - and she quickly earned the love and respect of all of the Marines that served with her. Lt. Eric Pedersen paid $250 of his own money to a young Korean boy, Kim Huk Moon, for her. The only reason Kim sold his beloved horse was so he could buy an artificial leg for his older sister, Chung Soon, who lost her leg in a land mine accident.

Kim’s loss was the Marines’ gain.

It was not only Reckless’ heroics that endeared the Marines to her - it was her incredible antics off of the battlefield. You will not believe her antics when she was being ignored, or if she was hungry – let’s just say you never wanted to leave your food unattended. As legendary as she was for her heroics – her appetite became even more legendary. This horse had a mind of her own – not to mention, being very determined.

Reckless had a voracious appetite. She would eatanything and everything – but especially scrambled eggs and pancakes in the morning with her morning cup of coffee. She also loved cake, Hershey bars, candy from the C rations, and Coca Cola – even poker chips, blankets and hats when she was being ignored – or if she was trying to just prove a point.

One of Reckless’ finest hours came during the Battle of Outpost Vegas in March of 1953. At the time of this battle it was written that, “The savagery of the battle for the so-called Nevada Complex has never been equaled in Marine Corps history.” This particular battle “was to bring a cannonading and bombing seldom experienced in warfare … twenty-eight tons of bombs and hundreds of the largest shells turned the crest of Vegas into a smoking, death-pocked rubble.” And Reckless was in the middle of all of it.

Enemy soldiers could see her as she made her way across the deadly “no man’s land” rice paddies and up the steep 45-degree mountain trails that led to the firing sites. “It’s difficult to describe the elation and the boost in morale that little white-faced mare gave Marines as she outfoxed the enemy bringing vitally needed ammunition up the mountain,” Sgt. Maj. James E. Bobbitt recalled.

During this five-day battle, on one day alone shemade 51 trips from the Ammunition Supply Point to the firing sites, 95% of the time by herself. Shecarried 386 rounds of ammunition (over 9,000 pounds – almost FIVE TONS! -- of ammunition),walked over 35 miles through open rice paddies and up steep mountains with enemy fire coming in at the rate of 500 rounds per minute. And as she so often did, she would carry wounded soldiers down the mountain to safety, unload them, get reloaded with ammo, and off she would go back up to the guns. She also provided a shield for several Marines who were trapped trying to make their way up to the front line. Wounded twice, she didn’t let that stop or slow her down.

What she did in this battle not only earned her the respect of all that served with her, but it got her promoted to Sergeant. Her heroics defined the word “Marine.” She was BELOVED by the Marines. They took care of her better than they took care of themselves – throwing their flak jackets over her to protect her when incoming was heavy, risking their own safety.

Her Military Decorations included two Purple Hearts, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with star, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, all of which she wore proudly on her red and gold blanket.

There has never been a horse like Reckless, and her story needs to be preserved.

RENO — Halloween is the perfect time to be someone else, and to make your friends and family smile. In fact, about 15 percent of you are buying costumes for your pets. And, as a totally devoted pet owner, you’ll have your pet join in on all the cooky, spooky Growl-o-ween fun.

Allowing your pet to don a costume for the festivities makes for great photos and memories. But, be sure to keep these important costume dos and don’ts in mind to keep your pet healthy, safe, and comfortable for Howl-o-ween:

See No Evil

Pick a pet costume that allows your pet to see and breathe easily. You never want to interfere with a pet’s vision, hearing or breathing. Therefore, never buy an animal costume that requires a mask.

Don’t Get All Choked Up

The neckline of your pet’s costume should not be tight or restrictive. The costume is too tight for your animal if you notice your pet chewing, pawing or showing any other signs of discomfort.

Feelin’ Hot, Hot, Hot

Only use lightweight fabric when making or buying your animal’s costume. You don’t want your faithful furry friend to become overheated or uncomfortable.

Beware of Hazards

Look out for all types of choking hazards such as beads, small objects or loose dangling accessories. Don’t place any such objects on your pet’s outfit. These could be chewed off and swallowed, or simply fall off and be eaten, either of which presents choking hazards for your animal.

Dress for Success

Plan to have a dress rehearsal before Halloween to be sure your pet looks good and feels great, too. And, it’s a great opportunity to take your photos ahead of time.

New Sponsor for Pets of the Homeless

Pets of the Homeless, Executive Director, Genevieve Frederick announced that Critter Alert Center is sponsoring the nonprofit with a portion of registration proceeds.

Mark Arnold, CEO of Critter Alert Center picked Pets of the Homeless for his community outreach because of an experience he had with a homeless man and his pet.

“A few of months ago,” he explained, “as I was walking into a convenient store when I noticed a man and his dog standing at the store corner, presumably to be in the shade. As I approached the man, he mustered up a smile and I asked what his dog’s name was. He introduced Rusty to me, who surprisingly put out his paw to shake my hand when I leaned in to pet him. I thanked him on teaching Rusty trick as it seemed to break the ice.

He told me Rusty was a rescue and obviously a mixed breed. The two of them have been together for 6 years and when he lost his job as a banker two years ago, his wife left him and he lost his home. He just could not find work once he went to the streets because of his appearance, yet he did manage to do some yard work from time to time and any other handyman stuff he could find.

As we chatted, he never once asked anything of me. I pulled out a $20 and said to please go inside and get whatever he wanted while I watched Rusty for him. A few minutes later, he came out with several cans of dog food, a pre-made sandwich and few bottles of water. It was clear he spent more money on his pet than he did on himself. He then put his hand out to give me the leftover money. I politely told him to keep it and spend it wisely. As I was leaving, he put his hand out and I shook it. Almost instantaneously, Rusty did the same.

I will never forget. I have looked for them from time to time, but have not had any luck so far. Hopefully something good came to them and they have found a permanent home.

We at CAC will do our part by contributing a portion of registrations to Pets of the Homeless.”

Technology professionals focused on pet-safety founded Critter Alert Center. They understood there is a better way to help recover missing pets. Their goal is to expedite the recovery process so the owner and pet are reunited as soon as possible. Critter Alert Center believes leveraging today’s technology (internet, social media outlets, and wireless communications) is the best way to distribute a missing pet’s information.

Member collection sites of Pets of the Homeless , have provided over 80 tons of pet food. With cash donations the nonprofit has provided veterinary care to over 4,300 pets owned by homeless.

1st Annual Lake Tahoeswim to benefit FOR PETS SAKE Rescue

Reno,NV – Open water swimmers, Robert Burks 40 & Mike Ryder56, are taking on the challenge this August to swim the second deepest lake inthe United States, Lake Tahoe. Theywill be swimming from South Lake Tahoe to North Lake Tahoe; a total of 21 milesand approximately 11 hours. With nowetsuits these two swimmers will face not only a high altitude swim, but willnot stop to rest the entire time. More people have stood on top of MountEverest than have swum the length of Lake Tahoe. As per English Channel rulesonly one swim suit, one cap, and one pair of goggles are allowed, and theycannot touch anyone or anything during the event. Their support crew will tossthem a water bottle, or sports drink, every thirty minutes.

Bothswimmers swim for Sierra Nevada Masters and have a deep affection for pets andpet rescue. This monumental swim is benefiting FOR PETS SAKE small petrescue. FOR PETS SAKE has been saving petsin and around the Reno area for over 20 years. The much needed finances willhelp fund pet rescue and rehabilitation efforts. 100% of all donations will godirectly to FOR PETS SAKE. Morgan and Jeremiah have spent the last two months preparing for this event -- we are very proud of their commitment and the level of savvy they have been demonstrating with Henry and Otis.

Although the process of preparing for this event was not a "program", Deb Conrad and Suzy Anderson, who have been supporting these two kids on this journey, can attest that it has been a wonderful learning experience for all involved. Humans and horses alike have been facing some new challenges and overcoming them. This is how we know working with horses is powerful - even when the intention might not be to teach positive life skills, it is inevitable when working toward goals with your horse partner!

Feline Spay/Neuter Voucher Guidelines

The following guidelines are courtesy of the FRONN Feline Spay/Neuter Voucher Program, full details must be obtained from them. PetFolio/Art Paws does not administer any aspect of this program, nor assumes any risks associated with it.

The Feline Rescue of Northern Nevada (FRONN) is happy to participate at Artown's 11th Annual Art Paws, Sunday, July 17, 2011, at McKinley Arts & Cultural Center, Reno, 10am to 5pm.

FRONN will bring with them a limited number of Feline Spay/Neuter vouchers from the ABC Vet Clinic, 775-358-6211. These are issued in limited quantities based on FONN donations, and the current co-payment is $30, but subject to change. The full cost of vaccinations is included with your voucher and is paid for by FRONN.

The ABC Vet Clinic is open Monday through Thursday. Drop off time is between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00a.m. Pick up time is between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. You must arrive at your appointment on time and return at the end of the day NO LATER THAN 4:30 p.m. They are located at 121 18th Street, Sparks (One block west of Rock & Victorian).

There are NO income restrictions for receiving a voucher. If you have multiple cats, there is a possibility you may have to receive your vouchers at different times depending on availability. We will do our best to accommodate multiple cats so they can all be done at once.

There are NO geographic restrictions for receiving your voucher. You must, however, be able to make the drive to ABC Vet Clinic at the proper times.

Vouchers are limited to 3 per household per year. If you have a special situation, please contact us to explain, and FRONN will do what they can to help you.

This program is for the general public and not for animal rescuers. If you operate your own rescue, please arrange for your own spay/neuter at the expense of your own organization.

Operation Baghdad Pups coordinates complicated logistics to reunite these beloved pets with their service men and women back in the U.S. These important animals not only help our heroes cope in the combat zone, but they also help our troops come home mentally, as well as physically.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Nevada agriculture officials are warning horse

owners about possible exposure to a deadly and infectious virus,

though no cases have been reported in the state.

State Veterinarian Phil LaRussa said in a Tuesday memo to horse

owners and veterinarians that the Equine Herpes Virus-1 traced to

an outbreak in Utah is a severe strain spread by air and by contact

with humans.

The disease poses no threat to people. But it is easily spread

among horses, alpacas and llamas by touch or by sharing feed,

brushes, bits and other equipment.

LaRussa says the National Cutting Horse Association has notified

owners who participated in the Western National Championships last

month in Ogden, Utah.

LaRussa says all horses that participated in the competition should

be monitored for signs of disease.

“THE LAST WOLF”

On April 22^nd 2011, we lost one of the two remaining pure wolves at our sanctuary in Nevada. Stubby was over 14 years old and came to the refuge as a young wolf pup from a place called Ligertown in Idaho. He and his two siblings Curly and Floppy came to the refuge when it was located in Arizona in May 1997.

Each of these wolves was unique in their own way. Stubby was the Alpha of his group, named for his short stubby tail; Floppy for his one ear which for the longest time “flopped” over and would not stand straight up and then Curly with has one ear curled under, who had most definitely become the Omega as he aged and began having issues with his site.

Curly now howls alone in his kennel. Although the other wolf-dogs join in, he is the last pure wolf here. After being together for their entire lives I wonder if he sensed that Stubby was fatally ill and understands that he has joined Floppy on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, or if he is still looking for him to come home. We’ll never know.

In the work that we do, chances are that another pure wolf will come our way at some point, joining our pack of high and low content wolf-dogs, but Curly will most likely not live to see that day or greet that animal as only he can do.

   Hi, my name is Sally, I have met a lot of dogs in my life, but this guy is amazing.  Recently I volunteered with a rescue group in Puerto Rico called "Save a Sato" for one month. I was there solely to lend a helping hand to the horrendous animal over-population problem (did you know:  there are between 100,000 to 200,000 homeless dogs on this island). While volunteering, I fell in love with a specific dog named "Octavio." Yes, that is him above.

   Octavio has been homeless his whole life and has never had a home. Living on the harsh streets of Puerto Rico, a kind person finally brought him to the shelter. He spent his first year in that kennel. Now, I have flown Octavio to Reno, where he is currently being fostered.

Octavio is a mixed breed called a "sato" (which means street dog in Spanish). He is truly an amazing dog.  He is up-to-date on all vaccines, as well as neutered.  He is well mannered and ready for your family.

On these days, people may chose to come to the shelter for our Adoptathon where we will be open 36-hours straight. We will serve "breakfast at midnight" as well as have bedtime stories with Stewie the Worlds Longest Cat.

Or, people may chose to come by the Pet Adoption Festival at the Atlantis Casino Parking Lot on Saturday. At this event there will be entertainment, vendors and lots and lots of animals for adoption.

One of the Smallest Giraffes Ever

Meet Baby Margaret the Giraffe

Her eyes are beautiful. Most babies measuring 5 ft would be considered big, but newborn giraffe, Margaret, at Chester Zoo, UK is seen as unusually small for her species. She is one of the smallest giraffes ever born at Chester Zoo but pint-sized Margaret will soon be an animal to look up to.

Little Margaret, who is the first female Rothschild giraffe born at the zoo, is being hand-reared by her dedicated keepers. The first calf for six-year-old mum Fay, Margaret, who was born two weeks early, tipped the scales at just 34 kilos (75 lbs) and is a mere 5 ft tall.

Tim Rowland's, team leader of the Giraffes section, said: 'Margaret is one of the smallest giraffe calves we have ever seen. Fay isn't the largest of giraffes and Margaret was also early which might go some way to explaining her size. 'Margaret was having difficulty suckling so our keeping team are now hand-rearing her.

Wild (Urban) Things…

Reclaiming their territory?

In the Hidden Valley area of Reno’s Truckee Meadows wild horses and occasional deer feast on lush lawns and expensive shrubbery while damaging sprinkler heads and leaving unwelcome ‘calling cards’! Well meaning residents accept these expenses and inconveniences considering them collateral damage as it were. Many residents do not!

It is always a treat in certain parts of southwest Reno to see a huge owl high in a tree dodging pesky small birds very aware of feeding habits of their much larger cousins. In most cases these big guys are eventually driven off but not before reducing the number of birds and rodents in the area and an occasional curious cat or small dog in the process. Very large and well fed owls and hawks are thriving in all parts of our urban community as evidences of their successful hunting skills are frequently seen…mostly just feathers!

It wasn’t a pretty sight one morning several years ago when a southwest Reno family put their pet rabbit out in their fenced-in back yard to munch on dew laden grass. Later when they went to collect the bunny there wasn’t much left to collect and in looking around they saw two bobcats figuratively saying “Thanks” while picking their teeth and smiling after the donation of such a fine meal! They were later seen several more times by neighbors, but not at mealtime!

On her way to work not long ago my wife was stunned when she saw a coyote proudly strutting down the middle of Meadow Springs Street with a doomed cat in his mouth! Coyote sightings are becoming more numerous in our area as are postings of missing dogs and cats on fences and light posts.

Virginia Lake has a very large year-around population of ducks and geese and it is fun to watch kids feed them on bread, grain and such. Sometimes they are completely surrounded by hungry, noisy honkers, ducks, and gulls and quite often very small children are frightened by their demands. On rare occasions, a huge white swan will fly in and it is a treat to see it land, commence grooming, and take off again. Picturesque! No doubt this beauty has a permanent home on the campus of the University of Nevada and is just ‘visiting’ at Virginia Lake!

RENO, NEV. (March 23, 2011) - Beginning April 4, 2011 a portion from each entree purchased on Monday nights at the Wild River Grille, throughout the month, will be donated to the Shakespeare Animal Fund of Nevada.

The non-profit fund is designed to help people who love their pet - but can't afford veterinarian bills that might save its life. It was founded after the loss of a beloved Cocker Spaniel named "Shakespeare". He died after a very costly illness, and in his memory the fund was founded to help others who might face financial problems while trying to save their pet.

In 2011, the SAF paid out more than $250,000 in the Northern Nevada area to help sick and injured pets. With the ongoing assistance from Shakespeare animal fund, volunteers are able to provide emergency food and medical supplies to animals in need, and assistance to 150 to 200 people each month .

"Wild River Grille is a pet-friendly establishment and dogs are always welcome on our expansive Riverside patio, but we felt that this event has become such a success we would continue the Monday Night tradition this summer," says Valerie Moore of the Wild River Grille.

All dogs visiting Wild River Grille receive a complimentary bowl of water and a special treat!
Shakespeare Animal Fund of Nevada depends on the support of the community and events such as Wild River Grille's "Dinner with your Dog". Last year Wild River Grille was able to donate hundreds of dollars to the organization, all while providing great food and hospitality.
