RENO — Halloween is the perfect time to be someone else, and to make your friends and family smile. In fact, about 15 percent of you are buying costumes for your pets.  And, as a totally devoted pet owner, you’ll have your pet join in on all the cooky, spooky Growl-o-ween fun.

Allowing your pet to don a costume for the festivities makes for great photos and memories. But, be sure to keep these important costume dos and don’ts in mind to keep your pet healthy, safe, and comfortable for Howl-o-ween:

See No Evil

Pick a pet costume that allows your pet to see and breathe easily. You never want to interfere with a pet’s vision, hearing or breathing. Therefore, never buy an animal costume that requires a mask.

Don’t Get All Choked Up

The neckline of your pet’s costume should not be tight or restrictive. The costume is too tight for your animal if you notice your pet chewing, pawing or showing any other signs of discomfort.

Feelin’ Hot, Hot, Hot

Only use lightweight fabric when making or buying your animal’s costume. You don’t want your faithful furry friend to become overheated or uncomfortable.

Beware of Hazards

Look out for all types of choking hazards such as beads, small objects or loose dangling accessories. Don’t place any such objects on your pet’s outfit.  These could be chewed off and swallowed, or simply fall off and be eaten, either of which presents choking hazards for your animal.

Dress for Success

Plan to have a dress rehearsal before Halloween to be sure your pet looks good and feels great, too.  And, it’s a great opportunity to take your photos ahead of time.

Shakespeare Animal Fund to Host

Applause for Paws Event

Benefiting Pets and People in Need

Reno, Nevada - Make plans to attend Shakespeare Animal Fund's Applause for Paws fundraiser on November 11th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino. This exciting evening includes live music, magic, complimentary champagne, a chocolate fountain, appetizers, an opportunity to win a 32” color Vizio TV and much more.

Due to severe funding cutbacks from several sources, Shakespeare Animal Fund is relying on this community fundraiser to continue supporting its mission statement - paying emergency veterinarian bills to stop the suffering of local animals.

Emceed by radio personality extraordinaire Monica Jaye, the evening will offer a smorgasbord of entertainment plus a silent auction with fabulous items not typically seen at fundraisers.

The cost for advance tickets is $35 or $40 at the door.

To learn more about Applause for Paws and to purchase tickets in advance, call (775) 342-7040 or e-mail
