Top Dogs Run for the Ribbon at Dog Agility Championships

The American Kennel Club's
16th Annual National Agility Championship
runs this Friday and Saturday
at the Livestock Events Center,
free to the public!

This is the first time the competition has come to the West Coast since 2003.  And it is expected that many local dogs will compete along side of more than 900 talented dogs, 88 different breeds, from all over the country.

Agility dog competitions are a fast growing sport in America.  In fact, the American Kennel Club announced that  agility IS the FASTEST growing sport with a large following nationwide since its inception in 1978.  Dogs compete against the clock according to canine's height.  Teams of handler and canine run for the cleanest and fastest rounds.

Dog agility originated in England with its basis in Grand Prix horse jumping competitions.  The leaping dogs actually are said to be mimicking equines as they go over fences, weave through poles, teeter-totter across boards, and negotiate odd and colorful obstacles along a prescribed course.

The American Kennel Club's 16th annual National Agility Championship runs this Friday and Saturday at the Livestock Events Center, Reno.  FREE.

Friday:  8am-5pm
Saturday:  7am-6pm

Art Paws celebrates canine independence
at Artown

RENO, NV – As the nation celebrates its independence in the month of July, Art Paws asks not what animals can do for their country, but what their community can do for them.

More than 100 local vendors have come together to celebrate canine independence days at Art Paws, presented by PetFolio Magazine. Let them experience the wind behind their fur. Savor the joy of gourmet everything in the company of friends. Imprint their immortal soul on canvas. Gaze into a crystal ball with the aid of a psychic. Think, therefore be. Dog. And proud of it.

Art Paws is the only canine-friendly event at the Artown festival. The event features products and services designed to uplift the canine mind, body, and soul – and help animals in need. This year voting at Art Paws will determine which three local animal-aid agencies will garner all the proceeds from the event.  In 2011, the US Wolf Refuge, Feline Rescue of Northern Nevada, and Boxers & Buddies received more than $6,000.

All proceeds from the event will benefit local non-profit pet organizations.
The 16th annual Artown festival is a feast of more than 400 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide during the month of July with major funding provided by the City of Reno. More information is available from: www.renoisartown.com.

You Can Make a Difference for the Homeless & Their Pets

Pets of the Homeless Urgently Requests the Help of Area Businesses

Homeless and Their Pet Companions Are in Desperate Need of Help from the Community

Carson City, NV – Pets of the Homeless nonprofit has been tasked with recruiting collection sites throughout the United States where donors can drop off pet food. Area businesses are urgently needed to partner with Pets of the Homeless and become collection sites. There is no cost to become a partner and the benefits are tremendous. Pets of the Homeless provides a collection site kit that instructs how to collect and distribute the donations and authorizes the use of their logo and photos. In addition, partners receive a guide to accessing free publicity in their area.

By becoming a collection site, businesses benefit by unifying staff members, gaining internet exposure and publicizing their business to current and potential customers. These businesses also make the statement that they are socially responsible members of their community. But, perhaps the largest benefit of all is the positive impact that is made in the lives of our less fortunate neighbors and their pet companions.

The need for pet food is massive, so time is critical. Any interested businesses are urged to go to the website at petsofthehomeless.org to join, or for more information, emailinfo@petsofthehomeless.org.

PetFolio Readers Alert: New Doggie at the Sheriff's Office

Generous donation brings new K-9 to the Sheriff’s Office

Reno, Nevada. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is looking forward to welcoming the newest member of its K-9 program, K-9 Akim.

Akim is scheduled to arrive in Washoe County in early March and will partner with Deputy Corey Solferino to work both patrol and narcotics.

The Sheriff’s Office acquired Akim thanks to a very generous donation from a member of the Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association who wishes to remain anonymous. Given the importance and effectiveness of the K-9 Program, the donor wanted to make sure the Sheriff’s Office would be able to replace K-9 Kraft who passed away unexpectedly last year.

The donation provided funds for the purchase of a new canine and all travel and training for Akim and Deputy Solferino. The donation included a protective vest designed specifically for canines.
K-9 Akim is a 17-month-old, sable Czechoslovakian Shepherd. He was born in Prague and brought to the United States to train for a career in law enforcement at the highly reputable Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana. Deputy Solferino first met Akim at Vohne Liche and chose him as a partner from hundreds of potential dogs.

Solferino said he started by working with a number of different dogs in situations that would potentially show how the dog would react when out on patrol.

“After four days I was down to just two dogs,” he said. “Akim was the younger of the two, the rookie, but I was impressed with his eagerness, his enthusiasm and his interest. The two of us bonded very well when going through training exercises so I knew we would become a great team.”
Deputy Solferino and Akim continued intensive training in a variety of law enforcement skills such as tracking, narcotics search, and suspect apprehension assistance.

Solferino and Akim are scheduled to graduate from their Vohne Liche training on March 9.  At that time, they will head home to Nevada and as soon as they qualify under the Peace Officers Standard and Training program they will go to work with the Sheriff’s K-9 program.

“We are really looking forward to getting home and getting to work,” Solferino said.
