FarWest Horse Forum Making Strides Forward to Promote Horse Activities Locally

FarWest Horse Forum is working on bringing together all the different horse organizations in the Northern Nevada area, and hopefully boost attendance at related horse outings.

Our goal is to keep everyone informed of all the upcoming events in the area. If you have questions or advice to give, this is a place to share with your fellow horse people. As well as a place to post horses for sale or lease, and to sell horse related items such as tack, trailers and clothing.

If you were at a show over the weekend, or your equine friend did something amazing you caught on camera, you can share your pictures on the FarWest Horse Forum wall!! If it is equine related, we want to know about it!!!

Canine Rehabilitation Center and Sanctuary (CRCS)

Several years ago a man abandoned his home. Inside he left his young female dog, Piper. Family members found her, tied her up in their back yard, and kept her isolated there for one year. Finally tired of the dog, they surrendered her to their local shelter. Due to behavior, she wasn’t made available for adoption. For months she couldn’t get out of her kennel, go on walks, or interact with people. One year later, Piper was still living at the shelter. Eventually adopted, though she was returned within four days and labeled “unadoptable”. Her future was not looking bright. When we rescued Piper she was a mess. She wasn’t bonding with people, couldn’t focus on anything, and couldn’t be near other dogs. As we got to know her, we discovered so much about her little personality. When observing her in different environments, her behavior told us what she so desperately craved. We listened to her requests, slowly she blossomed. She became affectionate, learned manners, was socialized with other dogs, and even learned how to play. After 4 months of practice and 224 hours of socialization training, she was ready for a forever home. After much searching, we found a family that fit Piper’s requests. She was adopted! She now happily lives with two other dogs, a cat, and parents that adore her! These days Piper can be found running on the beach in Tahoe, hiking with her family, or snuggling with her canine sibling. We still keep in touch with Piper’s parents. Piper was not our first client, nor the last. She is one of many amazing souls we have been honored to work with. We are CRCS, and with open arms we welcome dogs with no hope. We are dedicated to the dog that sits in a shelter for two years, only to have someone meet them and say "no thanks". We are dedicated to the dog labeled "un-adoptable" and scheduled to be euthanized through no fault of their own. We are dedicated to the dog that gets adopted and returned in the shelter system over and over. Our story is more than finding them a home; it is about providing guidance and love, training and socialization, life skills and practice out in the community. We stand for something much bigger than "saving a dog". It is about listening to the dog and understanding what type of environment THEY are asking for. Our story is about bringing people and dogs together. There are no "good" dogs and "bad" dogs. Just dogs with stories. These are our clients and they have our heart. We would be humbled to win the $10,000.00. With this money we would expand our services, save more lives, and create more stories like Piper’s. We wouldn’t be who we are today without community support and those angels that help share our stories. Thank you for this opportunity Reno Dodge. Forever grateful, the CRCS team & supporters.

Meet Joel Silverman! At Art Paws and the Nevada Humane Society Events for Dog Training Gerus

Joel Silverman Gives Reno's Pet Owners
A New Leash On Training

You and your pet can also meet Joel Silverman at Artown's 13th Annual Art Paws, Sun July 21, 10am to 5pm, at McKinley Arts & Cultural Center, Reno.

JOEL SILVERMAN: Bow Wow!

Joel Silverman, a Hollywood animal trainer and pet training author is coming to Artown’s 13th Annual Art Paws!  With a long list of TV and film credits, Joel is a much sought after Hollywood animal trainer with more than 30 years of national experience with all shapes and sizes of animals.

Joel kicked off his career at the age of sixteen, at Sea World, picking up trash and studying the animals.  He was promoted to a Marine Mammal Trainer, training such mammals as dolphins, sea lions, and killer whales. From Sea World, Joel went on to work at Universal Studios in Hollywood, CA.

"For the past 15 years, Joel had been responsible for the coordination and training of the dogs and cats in the IAMS commercial and print ads. On the big screen, he worked with Russell Crowe in France as he trained “Tati,” the Jack Russell terrier, in the feature A Good Year. He also trained the big dog named “Dreyfuss” from the tv series Empty Nest from 1998 to 2002.

“I am very excited to participate in Art Paws,” said Joel.  “I will be there with my own dog, Foster, to answer questions, sign books, and give a free half-hour seminar at 11:00am.”

Joel is a top dog kind of dog trainer.  Joel received the “2008 Trainer of the Year Award,” which was presented at the Westminster Dog Show in 2009. And Joel has been responsible for the coordinating/training of dogs and cats for the IAMS national commercials and print ads for more than 15 years.  He hosted a very successful Animal Planet show "Good Dog U" which ran from 1999 to 2009, and within a few weeks of its first airing, became one of the highest rated weekend shows on Animal Planet.

Artown’s 13th Annual Art Paws, sun. July 21, 2013, at Mckinley Arts and Cultural Center, Reno, will be a canine carnival of fun. The fact that Joel Silverman will be there will just add to the experience and allow for education for you and your dog!

METHOD

Joel’s uses what he calls a ‘hybrid” style to teach dogs. He uses much of what he learned as a marine mammal trainer, and much of what he has learned through his career as a Hollywood Dog Trainer. This style is based on two things:
  • Building a great relationship with your dog PRIOR to training
  • Understanding that all dogs are different; What works for one may not work for another
  • As a motion picture and TV dog trainer, Joel had no choice other than to teach dogs to understand control and distance. Distance is key.
BOOKS

Joel has authored three books:
  • “What Color is Your Dog?” (2009)
  • “Take 2 – Training Solutions for Rescued Dogs” (2010)
  • “Bond With Your Heart; Train With Your Brain” (Winter/2012)
In 2012, Joel came out with his new nationally syndicated TV series, “DOG & CAT TRAINING WITH JOEL SILVERMAN,” which airs every Saturday morning at 7:30 am on the CW Reno/My 21 TV in Reno.
Currently Joel lives in Reno, Nevada.

Long Live the Life and Good Works of Reno's Stewie the Cat

Stewie — a Maine coon cat who frequented Artown's Art Paws during his summers, passed on Feb. 4.  But Stewie is Reno's sweetheart forever.  And now, he is also the “longest domestic cat ever,” according to a Guinness Book of World Records certificate received last week by his mom Robin Hendrickson.
The certificate reads: “The longest domestic cat ever was Mymains Stewart Gilligan at 123 cm (48.5 in) long. He was owned by Robin Hendrickson and Erik Brandsness (USA) and was measured on 28 August 2010.”
Stewie was certified as the longest living domestic cat before his death, as well as the the holder of the longest feline tail in 2011. Friday’s certificate certifies him as the longest domestic cat EVER, according to Guinness Book of World Records.
Stewie has a long legacy in our community.  His work as a therapy cat helping people in medical care and as a feline ambassador for animal causes endeared him to all..
